APC crisis: Why we can’t continue to remain in party – Shehu Sani hints on exit

The Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has said that he and the other aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress, APC would no longer remain in the party because they were tired of being treated as ‘slaves.’Sani said the new National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, would have resolved the issues bedevilling the party but assumed power very late.Addressing reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, the lawmaker said, “I wish Adams had come earlier because like I said, these grenades that were laid by the former chairman will explode in a matter of days.”Sani said the party leaders including President Muhammadu Buhari have proved incapable of handling the crisis.Sani said, “It is also very clear to us that even President Muhammadu Buhari is incapable of tackling the menace of the governor of Kaduna state.“How can a governor openly call for violence against Senators and not a statement came from the seat of power cautioning such a governor?“How can a governor move bulldozers and demolish a house of a fellow party member , the one who helped him to be where he is and there is not even a statement from the presidency?“The governor uses the machinery of the state to emasculate political opponents. He even framed me for murder and there was no statement that came from the presidency to caution such a governor.“ Virtually, Kaduna state under governor El- Rufai does not create conducive environment for any of us to remain in that party (APC).“There were three attempts to resolve the Kaduna APC crisis; there was Inuwa Abdulkadir committee which was never respected by the governor, there was the governor Masari-led committee which was also not respected and there is, as you can see, Tinubu’s attempt to reconcile members of the party which was simply naturalized and abandoned.“So we are not slaves to continue to be in that party.”Read the full article

The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has opined that even though the Federal Government gives all the money in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the Army and the Police, they can’t tackle insecurity in the country.He, however, noted that the issue of insecurity in Nigeria is not about money, but wrong approach and structure.The lawmaker stated this during his appearance on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, on Wednesday in Abuja.Ekweremadu said, “We are applying the wrong solution to problems that are clearly within our reach to resolve; the issue is not funding.“If you bring the whole money in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and give to the police, nothing will change – if you do that also with the Army, nothing will change; the problem is structure, not the funding.”“One of the responsibilities, as I said, is the issue of protection of lives and property.”Ekweremadu added, “In the formation of the society, government is given enormous powers to have control of instruments of cohesion and so, what has happened now is that the criminal elements have overwhelmed the government and government cannot perform that responsibility of protecting lives and property.“The criminal elements have overwhelmed the security sector and that’s the issue. Herdsmen killings: We will hold government accountable – Bukola Saraki

Following the persistent killings across the country, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Tuesday vowed that the Senate will continue to hold the Federal Government accountable.He said the aim was to ensure the security of all Nigerians.He said this while addressing his colleagues as they resumed plenary on the floor of the upper legislative chambers.Saraki also assured Nigerians that the senate will collaborate with security agencies to ensure adequate security across the country.According to Saraki, “Distinguished colleagues, the foregoing represents something of a recap of the journey so far, and also, in a sense, maps out the challenges ahead of us, which we must face head-on. We are resuming plenary today under a pall of national anxiety and apprehension over the state of insecurity in the country. We have been alarmed at so many senseless killings of Nigerians, with the high number of casualties in Plateau being among the most egregious of late.“In the wake of the atrocity, I led a Senate delegation to pay a condolence visit to the Governor of Plateau State and to commiserate with the people of the state. As always, our sympathies are with those who have lost loved ones in these acts of barbarity, and we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring peace and security in our country.“As you all know, we held a Security Summit some months back, specifically to address the rising insecurity and to work out strategies in collaboration with security agencies on safeguarding Nigerian lives. Furthermore, we set up the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of Security Infrastructure in Nigeria, chaired by Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan; and we must now take steps to consider the Report of that committee and take forward the recommendations therein as may be appropriate. Events have shown that we were right to take these steps in response to the security challenges facing the nation at this time.“Let me reassure Nigerians that we are as concerned as they are in the face of this challenge; and we continue to hold government accountable, in order to see to improvement in this area. In addition to the Security Summit earlier mentioned, we held briefings with Security Chiefs in a bid to better understand the problems; and have urged them to table their requests for more funds, so that the legislature can work on that aspect as well, to better equip the security forces to protect lives and property.“Through our oversight functions, we can ensure the proper utilization of such funds and see to it that we have full accountability in the management of the current security crisis.“I must say, once again, that the responsibility for ensuring security rests with each and every one of us. Issues of criminality are involved in these heinous acts, and the vigilance of community leaders and the average citizen is crucial, to assist the security agencies do their job. For us as the Senate, it does seem that these issues are also an indication that it is time to revisit the issue of State Police; and to devise a framework for the mopping up of the 350 million pieces of light weapons estimated to be in circulation within our borders – an alarming ratio of three weapons to one person.”Read the full article

Senator Omo Agege, The leadership of the All progressives Congress party (APC) in Delta State on Sunday declared that it is not bound by the consent judgement obtained by some members of the party in the state, following disagreement from the party’s Congress in the state.A statement signed by one Moses Kamanya, Publicity Secretary, Delta APC, a copy of which was made available to DAILY POST in Asaba on Sunday insisted that the state executives elected at the parallel congresses conducted by the senator ovie Omo- Agege, and Chief Great Ogboru led group have been adjudged illegal by the former chief John Odigie Oyegun led National working committee of the party before it was disbanded.Part of the text reads: “It has come to Our notice that on June 28, 2018, a consent judgement in respect of a suit filled by Odjebobo Desire Onoyefeme,and Lyndon I.O I Ugbome against the APC National working committee with suit No; FHC/ABJ/Cs /509/8 was secured by Senator Ovie Omo Agege and chief Great Ogboru led group of APC members in Delta state.The purported consent judgement is to accord legitimacy to the wards and LGA executives elected at the parallel congresses conducted by the Agege/Ogboru group which were earlier adjudged illegal by the chief Odigie John Oyegun-led NWC who actually conducted, supervised and approved the outcome of the recently conducted congresses of the APC nationwide.The attempt to procure this consent judgement came to our notice and that of the APC NWC on June 12, 2018. The then NWC found out that officers of the legal department in the APC, without its knowledge, directives, consent and approval acted in connivance with its appointed legal counsel to draw up terms of settlement proposed by the plaintiffs that were acting on behalf of the Agege/Ogboru group.The statement averred that the NWC immediately debriefs the counsel and appoint a new one, Chief J K, Gadzama (SAN) in his place, with the instruction to terminate the process of the consent judgement and purported terms of settlement as they were not authorised.But in a swift reaction, Chief Otega Emerhor through his media aid, Shedrack Onitsha said, ” We conducted the most credible congress that produced Chief Cyril Ogodo. Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Sunday said that he has concluded arrangements to sponsor a bill that would decentralise the nation’s policing system.Speaking on the rising insecurity and killings in Nigeria, the Deputy Senate President said that the nagging issue had continued mainly because the federating states were not constitutionally allowed to recruit, train, and equip enough manpower for the security of lives and property of citizens in their states.In a statement by his Special Adviser, Media, Uche Anichukwu, Ekweremadu was quoted as speaking during an interactive session with Fulbright Scholars, Exchange Scholars, and Graduate Students at the International Centre for Information and Nelson Mandela Institute of Research in his maiden lectures as a Professor and Senior Mentoring Scholar, E-Governance and Strategic Government Studies, Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Social Sciences, Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA.Ekweremadu said, “Unlike here in the United States where the component states, counties, big institutions set up police service to address their local needs, the Nigerian constitution vests the security of a very vast, multifarious, and highly populated country in hands of the Federal Government.“The internal security of Nigeriadepends on one man or woman, who sits in Abuja as the Inspector-General of Police. The governor of a state, though designated as the chief security officer of the state by the constitution, cannot direct the Police Commissioner of his State on security matters.“The Commissioner will have to clear with the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, who will clear with a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, who will also clear with the Inspector-General of Police, who may in turn need to clear with the President, who is the Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces. By the time the clearance comes, if it ever does, it would have been late.“Nigeria is the only federal system I know, which operates a unitary or centralised policing. Ironically, it was not the case in the beginning. The founding fathers agreed on a federal constitution, which allowed the component units to set up local police organisations. But it was overturned by the military and successive civilian regimes have continued to play the ostrich.”On the way forward, he said: “As far as I am concerned, whatever we are doing now is certainly not working and we cannot continue to do the same thing and expect a different result.“The real tragedy of the Plateau massacre is that we risk more attacks and loss of lives unless we decentralise our policing and allow every state at least to take their fates in their own hands.“So, despite the failure of previous attempts to decentralise the police during constitution amendments, I will introduce a bill that will bring about state police or decentrliased policing once I return to Nigeria. On the chances of the bill, Ekweremadu said events in recent years had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the current centrliased security system would never help the government to leave up to its primary responsibility, which he explained the welfare of the people and the protection of their lives and property. He said, ”“I think people are now facing the stack reality. I have been getting calls from serving and former governors and key players and interests, who were opposed to the idea of state police. They confess they have seen what some of us have been shouting from the rooftops over the years.“They want the bill introduced. The Governors Forum is also favourably disposed to the idea now. In fact, their Chairman, the governor of Zamfara State, one of the epicentres of the incessant killings recently ‘resigned’ his position as the chief security officer of his state as the current constitutional arrangement denies him the powers, manpower, and resources to stem the killings in his state.“The bill will also address the fears of Nigerians opposed to state police. Just like the judiciary, the bill will provide for a central police service commission and also structure the state police services in ways that immune them from abuse by any governor or state.
